Inspired by... Chanel Les Automnales Fall 2015

Today's post is all about having fun with my friend Anne from Linda.Libra.Loca (no, her name's not Linda :p). Lovely Anne has a regular post series called "Inspired by", where she recreates the look from makeup promo pictures, and this month, I decided to join her!

Chanel Les Automnales Fall 2015 makeup Look

We chose a picture of Chanel's Fall 2015 collection called Les Automnales, featuring a graphic brown smoky eye, nude lips and cheeks, and a flawless skin. And an artistic shadow. That shadow was the most challenging part to reproduce, and you have no idea what I had to do to try and recreate it... That included crawling on the floor and getting upside down to catch the natural sunlight coming from my window and get the window frame shadow in the right spot!

My version of Les Automnales
The direct sunlight is much warmer and makes the
eyeshadows look more shimmery than they really are.

The makeup look itself was not too difficult to copy, although I started wrong in the beginning and had to restart from scratch: I originally tried to work with shadow only, but I soon realized that the brown was going up way too high under my brow compared to the model, who has more of a sharp point in the outer corner. I decided to use a cream shadow pencil as a base to draw the right shape. Finding the right products was pretty easy, as I wear a lot of browns.

Here's everything I used:

- eyes: theBalm primer (not pictured); a Sephora + Pantone eyeshadow pencil from a couple years ago in a shimmery, warm brown as a base and to shape the outer lid V; 4 shadows from Dior's Cuir Cannage palette for the smoky look; Sephora eyeliner in Tiramisu (not pictured) on my lower lash line; Bobbi Brown eyeshadow in Espresso (1st shade on the right in the palette on top) to line and tightline my upper lash line, and to fill my brows; Physician's Formula mascara (not pictured).

- face: to get "flawless" skin like the model (despite having been bitten by mosquitoes last weekend!) I layered primer (Eclos), liquid foundation (Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat) and powder foundation (Dior Forever). The model is wearing a peachy nude blush under her cheekbone, and the closest color I found was Tarte Exposed, although it leans a little more pink.

- lips: I found the perfect peachy nude in my stash with Kiko Velvet Mat Satin in 600 Nude Beige.

A better look with indirect natural light

Go take a look at Anne's own interpretation of Chanel Les Automnales!

  1. You did an amazing job! I cant thank you enough for joining me, and I admire your picture even more now that I know how much effort the shadow was.
Opposite to you I hid in the cellar with a harsh light and tried to create the shadow by covering half the land with a magazine. The things we do for makeup...

  3. Oh God I've been calling poor Anne Linda for the past few months. I feel like such an ass lol. I thought I remembered her name being Anne, but then I see LindaLibraLoca and all I can think to say is Linda. She's nice to not yell at me about it lol. :)

Y'all did a great job recreating this one. It looks like a tricky one with the lighting, but you both made it work.

  4. You did a great job! Next time I do a smokey eye, I want to try to wing it out. It probably won't suit my lid shape, but it looks so pretty on you!

    1. I had to adapt the look to my lid shape too, I have super big lids (protruding eyes) and not much space between the crease and the brow. I think that's why I messed up initially and had to restart.

  5. OOO what a lovely brown smokey eye!!! I also love how strong your brows look here. The shape you created with eyeshadows is very interesting!

    1. I did my brows much bolder than usual by using a very dark brown shadow, instead of a light ashy brown, to recreate the model's look. I don't know if I like it, it's so different from what my brows usually look like!
In terms of shape, the one thing that's out of my comfort zone here is the fact that the dark crease color goes all the way to the inner corner and the side of the nose. That's not something I would do, I think it looks a little harsh! I usually apply my crease shade up to the middle of the eye and then blend it well. It was fun to try something new though!

    1. Thanks! It's quite a statement look, not something I'd wear everyday but perfect for a night out if I want to impress!

  7. Came over from Anne's blog. This is such a fun series and collab. The two of you did a great job, especially loved scrolling through the comments and reading your picture taking scenarios as well. The struggle is real when I'm trying to recreate looks - my eye shape, hood, creases and folds drive me crazy, lol.

    1. Welcome here Kimmy!
You know, understanding how to work with my eye shape and adapt makeup looks accordingly took me a lot of time. Like, years. Somehow I find very hard to judge my own features objectively, and I did a lot of things wrong in the beginning (like not going past my crease with the lid color or not blending the crease shade out past the outer corner, and both made my eyes look even rounder and bigger).
