This is volume II of our "new French liquid matte lipsticks for fall 2017" series: after the YSL Tatouage Couture, we're looking into Dior's new Rouge Dior Liquid Matte lipstick. Does it live up to Dior's reputation as a creator of amazing lip products? Let's find out!
First, I feel like I need to clarify what this product is, because Dior isn't really making things simple here:
- the newly launched Rouge Dior Liquid actually comes in 3 different finishes: Satin, Metal and Matte. We're going to be talking about the Matte formula only today. The type of finish is mentioned in the shade names so you know what you're buying (but everything is mixed together on most retailers' websites, which is super annoying). The shade I bought, for example, is 574 Lively Matte.
- to make things more confusing the packaging mentions "Liquid Lip Stain", and you know that Dior recently released an actual lip stain called Lip Tattoo. This is not a lip stain by any means, this is a classic liquid matte lipstick and it's completely different from the Tattoo. Which is a good thing because that one was a fail for me.
So, the Rouge Dior Liquid comes in a new packaging that remains true to the brand's style, a long rectangular dark blue tube with a clear stripe that allows you to see the color inside. As usual with Dior it's simple and functional yet elegant. It also has the signature rose scent of the Rouge Dior line (something that the Dior Addict line doesn't have) but it's very faint this time. You almost have to stuff the applicator up your nose to smell it.
The slanted velvety applicator has a rounded tip that makes it easy to draw sharp edges, especially in the Cupid's bow area. It also has a feature I had never seen: it's hollow with a hole in the angled part that acts as a reservoir. That's a good thing in my experience, I've never had to re-dip it in the tube to cover my lips.

The texture feels very creamy and is highly pigmented, completely opaque in one swipe. It applies easily to the lips but I have to work rather fast, as it seems to dry pretty quickly and become harder to move around. I'm the kind of person who likes to finesse on the contour of my lower lip and Cupid's bow, and I find that I have to hurry a bit more than usual.
The shade I bought, Lively Matte, is a pretty blue-based medium pink, slightly muted with mauve undertones. It has great color payoff that's true to what you see in the tube, and I think it makes a perfect cooler neutral for fall. It looks warmer on the pictures where I'm wearing it than it does in person, but the swatch just below is rather accurate.
The Rouge Dior Liquid dries down to a semi-matte finish that's not completely paint-like matte, but has the subtlest sheen to it. It's quite flattering because it doesn't make my lips look dry like some other liquid matte lipsticks, although it does settle into lines just a bit. I find that it becomes matter as it wears off too.
It's very comfortable to wear on my chronically dry lips. Although very lightweight it feels slightly moisturizing, unlike most liquid matte lipsticks that turn my lips into a chapped nightmare. It's absolutely not sticky, however it transfers for a while. After a few hours, the transfer is less noticeable but the color still looks fresh on my lips. I would say that it wears very well throughout the day, but it won't make it through a meal. As long as I don't eat, it stays put, even after my fourth cup of tea.
The Rouge Dior Liquid Matte is Dior's first permanent liquid matte lipstick, but you may remember that they had launched a limited edition formula for the holidays last year called Diorific Matte Fluid, that you can see in the first three pictures in this post (the oblong glass bottle with gold cap). You can check out my review for more details on that one, but here's a quick comparison:
- obviously, the packaging is a lot sleeker with the new Rouge Dior Liquid. No gold like the Diorific!
- the new RDL is much creamier, while the Diorific was very liquid-y. Keep in mind that it was a lip & cheek fluid, so the texture was completely different. The RDL feels more like a classic liquid matte lipstick.
- the RDL is considerably more pigmented and opaque than the Diorific was.
So these two formulas have really nothing in common. As a matte lipstick, the new Rouge Dior Liquid is far superior, having much better coverage and staying power.

Overall
The Rouge Dior Liquid is another great new liquid matte lipstick formula by a high-end French beauty brand! I am impressed by its pigmentation and opacity, and I enjoy how comfortable it is to wear. There is also a good choice of shades, from nude to black!
