#FrenchFriday: am I in love with Monsieur Big, Lancome's new mascara?

If you've been on my blog before, you must have noticed that I talk about Lancôme a lot. It's definitely my favorite French beauty brand, and even though they have a few misses sometimes, they have a ton of fantastic products that I love, from the Juicy Shakers to the Glow Subtil cream highlighters.

They're also famous for their great mascaras: Définicils for those who look for separation and a well defined fringe, Hypnôse for those who prefer dramatic volume, and my favorite, Grandiôse with its unique twisted wand. There is now a newcomer in Lancôme's mascara wonderland: Monsieur Big. I was going to buy it, but I was very lucky to receive it for consideration from Influenster. You can't even begin to imagine my excitement when I got the news that they were sending it to me! Was it as good as I hoped? Let's find out!

Here's how Lancôme describes the new Monsieur Big mascara: "A BIG volume mascara that delivers instant heart-stopping volume with up to 24 hour wear that lasts all night, and even the morning after, for your biggest, blackest, boldest lashes yet. You’ll know Monsieur Big Mascara is the one at first stroke. The BIG brush and ultra-creamy formula glides like silk onto lashes to deliver up to 12x more volume with up to 24 hour wear. No touch-ups, flaking and smudging. Perfect for your BIG evening out AND even the morning after."

I usually prefer mascaras that focus on defining and curling rather than adding volume. That's because I have a good amount of lashes and they're fairly long, but their incredibly straight and stubborn, with half of them insisting on pointing downwards. So I wasn't sure that this formula would work well for me, but as it turns out, it did!

First, I liked the brush, and I've become really picky when it comes to mascara brushes. It's big, but not so ginormous that I accidentally touch my lids while applying - there's nothing more annoying than getting smudges of mascara on your upper eyelids when you're already late in the morning! It's made of traditional bristles rather than silicone spikes, but they're flexible and soft so I don't feel like I'm maneuvering a tiny cactus near my eyeball every morning. What I like best about the brush is that it really grabs my lashes, they get caught in the bristles so they're coated in a nice amount of product in just one stroke. With some other mascaras I feel like my lashes just slide over the brush without getting in between the bristles, but that's not the case here.

The formula itself is creamy but not too thick, so it adds volume without making my lashes look like crazy spider legs. A problem I often have with volumizing mascaras is that they weigh my lashes down so much that they lose the curl I created with my eyelash curler, and go back to their usual downward facing dog position. Luckily Monsieur Big doesn't do that at all, on the contrary it really lengthens and lifts my lashes very, very well.

The only available shade at this time, Big Is The New Black, is a really dark black that enhances any eye color. It lasts all day long on me without any smudging or flaking, in fact my lashes look as fresh at the end of the day as they did right after application. And I've tested it in Las Vegas for a few days, where I constantly went from frigid air-conditioned hotels to 115-degree furnace heat outside (45+ in Celsius).

I've told you that my favorite mascara is Grandiôse (see my review), and I have to say that Monsieur Big gives me very similar results. Both add the right amount of volume, lift the lashes and lock in the curl, both last through a storm and are consequently a little tedious to remove. I don't know if the formulas are the same, but I'll say this: if you like how Grandiôse makes your lashes look but never got comfortable with the bent wand, or if you've never bought Grandiôse because of the $32 price tag, Monsieur Big is what you need. At $25 it's the cheapest of Lancôme's mascaras, cheaper even than Définicils ($27.50).

I don't know why Monsieur Big has a lower retail price than the others, because besides the lovely formula, it also has a rather nice tube. It's not a work of art as the Grandiôse packaging, but it looks a lot more modern than Définicils or Hypnôse, both of which now look a bit dated if you ask me.

Lancome Monsieur Big Mascara makes my lashes look great, even through my glasses!

Overall

Monsieur Big is another great mascara by Lancôme. Its well designed brush adds volume, lengthens and lifts my stubborn lashes, and it lasts all day no matter the heat or humidity. I would definitely recommend it, especially since it's cheaper than the other mascaras by the brand although it offers similar results to the pricey Grandiôse.
