Anti-aging and anti-blemish effects in one single skincare product?

PR Sample

Many anti-aging skincare products have rich textures that are only suitable for dry skins. In fact, there's a widespread myth that aging skin is necessarily dry, and that oiliness and blemishes are only targeting younger skin. This is, of course, not true, especially considering the fact that women's skin is affected by hormonal cycles and changes.

I've probably had more inflamed pimples in the past year than in a typical year as a teenager, and at the same time I'm noticing first signs of aging: fine lines that won't go away completely even when my skin is well moisturized, face contour being less defined. Having to choose between a product for blemish-prone skin and a treatment against aging means that I'm only addressing half of my skin concerns. I could use more products, like 2 different serums, but it means spending more and making my skincare routine even longer.

I was pretty excited when Radha Beauty offered me to test their Professional Age-Defying Skin Clearing Serum. This is one of the first products I see that combines powerful anti-aging ingredients with equally powerful anti-blemish ingredients. The ingredients list is extremely impressive, judge for yourself:
Organic Herbal Infusion, Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf (Aloe), Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C), MSM, Vegan Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), Retinol, Olive Oil Squalene, Capryloyl Salicylic Acid, Organic Rosehip Seed Oil, Carbomer, (2s)-2-Amino-5-guanidinopentanoic Acid, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree Essential Oil), Lavender Essential Oil, Ylang Ylang Essential Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Ethyl Hexyl Glycerin.

It contains no fillers at all, ONE texture agent (Carbomer), and TWO preservatives at the very end of the list, all of which are rated "good" on Paula's Choice Ingredients Dictionnary. What it contains tons of, on the other hand, are active substances. Vitamin C, Retinol, amino acids help correct signs of aging, while salicylic acid (also called BHA), tea tree, lavender and ylang ylang essential oils work against acne and oiliness. Niacinamide is supposed to have an effect on both, and to reduce inflammation. Finally, there are a few more ingredients to moisturize and condition skin: hyaluronic acid, vegetal squalene and rosehip oil. This is a really complete formula packed with effective ingredients. It's also cruelty-free and made in the USA.

The Serum comes in a sturdy, luxurious silver air-tight bottle with a pump. This packaging protects the formula from degradation by air and light, and its quality is quite impressive at this price point. One thing to know is that the serum, although technically free of added fragrance, has a very strong smell. The scent is due to the presence of tea tree, lavender and ylang ylang essential oils, all of which have an effect on acne and oily skin, but are also naturally heavily fragrant. The earthy, herbal odor of tea tree dominates and is made more powerful by the sweet floral scent of ylang ylang, while my nose cannot specifically detect the lavender.

The Skin Clearing Serum is a very light fluid that my skin absorbs almost instantly, and that doesn't leave any residue or film on the surface. While it does bring a bit of moisture, I prefer to follow with a basic moisturizer to bring my dehydrated skin all the hydration it needs to be smooth and supple (dehydrated does not mean dry, and skin can be dehydrated AND oily. I'll probably do a post about that common confusion this month). I decided to include it in my nighttime routine, as I use a more simple vitamin C and E serum in the morning under my sunscreen.

I haven't had a single pimple since I started using it, and the areas where I kept having them (chin, around the mouth) are definitely clearer. The anti-aging benefits take longer to be noticeable (and it's hard for me to say what can be attributed to this product since I've re-vamped my whole skincare routine), but I think that I'm seeing improvement in the few recent sun spots I have, and in the lack of firmness around my mouth.

Overall: Radha Beauty's Professional Age-Defying Skin Clearing Serum has an impressive formula packed with powerful ingredients to treat both signs of aging and acne/blemishes or oiliness. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for an affordable solution to fight both concerns, as long as you don't have a problem with a strong tea tree scent.

Where to buy? On Amazon, the current price is $21.89.

    1. A lot of treatments targeting acne are very drying and not appropriate for adult skin at all. Have you found products that worked for you?
