Strange and unusual: Choosy Pure Smile Lip Pack Milk

I really like to experiment with new and unique beauty products. Although I pay closer attention to what I put on my skin nowadays, I'm always excited to test cosmetics that come from other continents, especially when they look completely different from anything I know. When I go to the Asian market, I always browse the beauty section. It's usually full of hidden gems, although some remain mysteries to me due to the absence of any description in latin alphabet.

It's during one of these excursions to the Japanese market that I stumbled upon what is probably the weirdest beauty product I've ever tried. There, I found a display of what appeared to be lip masks, coming in different flavors. I assumed they were sheet masks for lips and decided to pick one, the Choosy Pure Smile Lip Pack in Milk. These masks had a little explanation in English in the back, and are made in Korea although the brand seems to be Japanese.

The lip mask contains ingredients that soothe and moisturize lips, like hyaluronic acid, milk protein, honey, collagen, aloe juice. The description says that you can also use it for "bust care" and a little drawing on the back side actually shows it on a woman's nipples... wait, nipple mask?! WTF? This drawing made me scratch my head for a while! So let's make this clear right now: I tested this product as a lip mask only. There's only one mask per package anyway so you'd need two to "treat" both nipples.

After opening the package I was surprised to find out that this is actually a gel mask, not a sheet. It's a piece of semi-solid, flexible hydrogel, kind of like these seasonal window decorations that stick to glass, shaped like lips. It's huge, probably three times larger than my lips, so it covers a good amount of skin around the lips.

Now let's pause for the silly looking picture:

Needless to say, I did this when I was alone at home.... but my cat looked at me like I had lost my mind. I had to press the gel mask firmly on my skin in the beginning, then it stayed in place. The package says to "leave on for 5-30 minutes". Wow that's specific. I probably left it on for about 15 minutes. There was a cooling sensation that developed after a couple of minutes, and that was about it. Not much else happened, nor did I feel like my lips or the skin around them was smoother or more moisturized after use. The mask had no discernible taste, and the fact that it's a gel rather than cloth soaked in lotion means that no liquid could get into my mouth.

Overall: that was fun, but it didn't really do anything for me! I may try again, but this time I would apply on wet lips, to see if more of the beneficial ingredients contained in the mask would be activated.

Where to buy: search the beauty section of Asian markets near you, or buy it online at Imomoko (US based Asian beauty store) or Ebay. Price should be around $1.50 per mask, a little more for the premium versions (some seem to have a gold or black pearl tint).

  1. I will be stuck with the picture of someone actually putting this mask on the nipples for quite some time, i am afraid.

    1. Haha, I know! I mean, who would do that and why?? I can understand how a breastfeeding mom needs nipple care, but I don't think this mask would be a good choice in that case. So, why on earth would anyone use it like that is beyond me...

    2. I guess at least it isn't toxic for the baby, as you can put it on your lips, too...

    3. Yes the ingredients look good enough although I wouldn't try to lick it... I'm not a formulation expert though!

  2. I can definitely say I've never tried anything like this before! It's nice that the mask is cheap, though less nice that it didn't do much.

    1. Yeah I was hoping for at least a nice moisturizing effect, but I didn't notice any difference.

  3. That's definitely an interesting looking mask and would be fun to try. It sounds more like a gimmick though, too bad it didn't do much for your lips!

    1. It's kind of gimmicky, yes. Fun and different but not really useful!
