If you're a regular reader, you know that I absolutely love the original Tatouage Couture from YSL. It's my favorite liquid matte lipstick formula, and it made it to my list of the best new makeup of 2018. So when YSL released the Tatouage Couture Metallics, I knew I had to try it! I bought the shade called Magnetic Prune Temper (105), and I'm ready to report my thoughts after using it for a little while. Is it as good as the classic formula? Keep reading to find out!

The new Metallics edition of the Tatouage Couture comes in 6 shades: there's a red, a rose gold, a copper, a cool pink, a fuchsia, and the one I bought, Magnetic Prune Temper. Based on the name, I was expecting a classic plummy shade (prune means plum in French, as in the fresh fruit rather than the dry one). It turns out to be a lot darker than I anticipated. I would describe it as a dark brown with purplish undertones. I ordered it online, as I almost always do, but I think I would have picked a lighter shade if I had seen the range before purchase. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful vampy color, but for me it's a bit hard to pull off. On the other hand, I think it could look gorgeous and much more wearable on someone with a deep skin tone.

So what about the metallic finish then? Well, I would say that Magnetic Prune Temper has a very fine gold shimmer peaking through, not that it has the reflective quality of a classic metallic. It's not mirror-like, not even a brushed metal effect (it is a matte, after all), but more of a shimmery color. I actually quite like this finish, I think it's more flattering on my dry lips than a full on matte metal. It looks smooth and doesn't emphasize the vertical lines on my lips.

Magnetic Prune Temper is not fully opaque in one swipe, I have to build it for an even layer of full color coverage. That semi-opaque payoff paired with the squarish applicator (that I discussed in detail in my review of the original YSL Tatouage Couture) and the dark shade means that I have to put some effort into the application to get a flawless result. It's definitely not a lipstick that I can slap on in a few seconds!

Once applied, I find that the Tatouage Couture Metallics is more matte than the original version. It dries down and sets more fully, so I have less transfer, and the finish on the lips is more of a true matte (besides the effect of the shimmer). Because of that it doesn't feel quite as hydrating as the original, but I don't find it drying or uncomfortable either. Surprisingly I find the wear not to be quite as long: it lasts well through drinks and snacks, but I don't really have any color left on my lips after a full meal.

OVERALL

The Metallics version of the YSL Tatouage Couture is a fun addition to the brand's lipstick range. I love the gold shimmer that doesn't emphasize the texture of my lips, but creates a pretty effect. While not quite as cushy as the original, I still find it comfortable to wear. Magnetic Prune Temper would suit deep skin tones beautifully, but it's also perfect for lighter skin tones who want a vampy, statement lip color.
