Is there anything that evokes a tropical vacation more than coconut? Hmm? I didn't think so. A few weeks ago I was kindly sent several products from the new Coconut Oil & Shea Butter line by professional hair care brand Marc Anthony, and every time I use them I'm taken back to Tunnels Beach in Kaua'i, where I enjoyed coconut water straight out of the nut last year. Sweet memories... But let's focus on the present and see what I thought about these products!
Hydrating Coconut Oil & Shea Butter Shampoo
This sulfate-free shampoo is infused with biotin and supposed to "restore dry, damaged hair and promote shiny, healthier looking hair".
First of all I adore the scent of this shampoo, which is similar to the rest of the line. It smells like creamy coconut with a hint of sugar, but it's neither too sweet nor overwhelming. It's perfectly balanced and so yummy! I like it much better than the sickly sweet scent of Hask coconut oil hair line for example.
Taking a look at the ingredients list, there are many things in there that should help dry and damaged hair, just as the brand claims: a gentle cleansing base, glycerin, coconut oil, shea butter, bamboo shoot, keratin, grape seed oil... plus a wide range of amino acids, the building blocks of protein. As for the biotin, it's the second to last ingredient in the list, so I wouldn't expect much from it - biotin seems to be pretty useless for hair growth according to the available scientific data anyway.
The texture of the shampoo is a creamy gel, and a little goes a long way! I need to use a lot less than I typically would with a regular shampoo, as it creates a thick and rich lather with very little product. It rinses easily, and it's very, very gentle on my hair. I can feel that it doesn't strip it off of all its natural oils, it doesn't feel "crispy" like it does after a purifying shampoo. It's a good thing because my hair tips don't dry out, but I have to wash my hair a little more often than usual. If you have dry hair or if you shampoo daily this is really a product for you! If you have oily roots and try to space out your shampoos like me, you should expect to wash your hair every 3 days max.
Hydrating Coconut Oil & Shea Butter Conditioner
Also sulfate-free, the conditioner is the ideal companion to the shampoo with similar beneficial ingredients. It rinses clean without weighing down my hair or leaving too much residue. Because I have very fine, wavy hair with dry length, I have to add another richer conditioner for easier detangling.
Using the shampoo and conditioner duo leaves my hair very soft, light, bouncy and the natural wave well defined. It does help with frizz a little bit, but if I want really smooth hair I need some more potent leave-in products - that is likely due to my hair type which is very prone to frizzing.
Hydrating Coconut Oil & Shea Butter Volume Hairspray
This is a waterless hair spray (I didn't know it was a thing!) that provides extra hold, fullness and volume.
Being as challenged as I am with hair styling I'm in no way a hairspray expert, but I can say that for me it does what it's supposed to. It keeps my ponies or messy buns in place without making my hair feel too crunchy. Alcohol is the first ingredient and it's really drying, but hopefully the presence of coconut oil and shea butter can balance it out.
Marc Anthony is best known for his hair care, but the Coconut Oil & Shea Butter line also includes body products - they're actually my favorites in the range!
Hydrating Coconut Oil & Shea Butter Body Wash
This yummy tropical shower gel is very creamy and gentle: it's sulfate-free as well, so no SLS or SLA, the cleansing agents are suitable for sensitive skin. Besides the coconut and shea it also contains some white tea and chamomile, both soothing and antioxidant. It cleanses well but it doesn't dry out my skin, in fact it leaves it very soft. This is a great option for anyone who suffers from dry skin!
Hydrating Coconut Oil & Shea Butter Deep Nourishing Body Lotion
My absolute fave in the range! This amazing body lotion is rich but doesn't feel greasy. Although it's nicely nourishing it penetrates well without leaving any residue on the surface. After use my dry skin is soft and supple, and it feels comfortable. I love the jumbo bottle with a pump: all body lotions should come with a pump! I just leave it on my bathroom counter and go for it whenever I need it. Since it's so convenient it's the moisturizer I've been using the most in the past few weeks!
Overall
The Coconut Oil & Shea Butter line by Marc Anthony was a really nice surprise! All the products are effective, gentle, and non-drying. They're all made in Canada and contain a bunch of beneficial ingredients, but they remain very affordable. If you're looking for high-quality yet budget-friendly hair and body products for your family I'd absolutely recommend this range.
