I told you recently that although I was completely ignorant about proper hair care and styling just a year ago, I was starting to up my game! I tested almost half a dozen different hair care routines in the last few months, and today I want to tell you about my first experience with a professional flat iron. So how did it go? Did I end up with smooth straight hair, or did I burn my fingers and fry my mane? Let's find out!
Irresistible Me contacted me a while ago with an offer to try their high-quality hair extensions. I already have the longest hair of my life (past the mid-back) plus being clumsy and lacking any skill or creativity when it comes to hair styling, I thought that testing one of their easy-to-use styling tools would be fore appropriate for me. That's how I got to try their Diamond Professional Styling Iron.
A word about Irresistible Me: unlike many other websites selling hair extensions, they're based in the USA, New York to be more precise. That's important for me because I know I'll easily get someone to talk to should I encounter any problem with an order, and of course shipping is considerably faster! They have a ton of real human hair clip-in extensions and wigs, as well as accessories, hair care products, and styling tools.
The Diamond Styling Iron is a 1" flat iron with Diamond Hi-Tech: the ceramic plates are coated with a mix of crushed diamond particles and tourmaline (how cool does that sound?) to straighten without damaging the hair and to reduce frizz. It's also a "smart" styling tool with some cool features such as an heat display that shows the current temperature all the time, an auto shut-off after 30 minutes if you don't use it, and floating plates that self-adjust to eliminate pressure points so that it won't pull your hair.
How did this highly technical tool work for me, a total styling newbie? Surprisingly well because it's thankfully super easy to use! Here are my thoughts:
- it came in a beautiful, sturdy black cardboard box with a magnetic closure that I'm definitely keeping for storage.
- the iron feels sturdy yet very light, and it's easy to maneuver thanks to the 360° power cord. The design allows the cord to turn freely at the end of the iron, so it never gets tangled and the tool can follow all your movements. I really like that feature, I often get frustrated when using my other styling tools (hair dryer and curling iron) because the cord getting tangled when I try to reach the back of my head drives me nuts! The cord is also very long, over 8 feet, so you can work in a poorly designed bathroom like mine, where the wall sockets are super far from the mirror... Last detail to make this tool user-friendly, there's a "thumbprint", a spot to place your thumb, for a comfortable and safe grip.
- it's really simple to use, with only 3 buttons: power, hotter and cooler, and that's it! The control buttons are on the inside of the iron so you don't accidentally change the settings during use. The front has a LED display that shows the exact temperature and a gauge that shows the level. Level 1 is for fine hair (250 to 300F), level 2 for normal hair (300 to 350F) and level 3 for thick or coarse hair (350 to 450). When you press the buttons to increase or decrease the heat, you see the desired temperature flashing a couple times on the display, then it gets back to the current temperature, so you can see it go up or down and know when it's ready.
- the plates heat up at lightning speed! Seriously, they reach the desired temperature surprisingly fast, within 15 seconds or so. The max temperature is 450F.
- my hair glides well through the plates, there's no pulling. Getting my whole hair smooth and straight is really fast, about 10 minutes, which is much faster for me than blow-drying (and I absolutely suck at that...). With the cool tips feature, a place at the end of the iron that doesn't get hot so you can hold it with your fingers, it's easy to guide it through the hair.
- it makes my hair silky smooth, super soft and much shinier. The frizz is also completely contained, which is quite an achievement on my crazy, fine but wavy hair! The difference is really striking: although I do like my natural waves, I have to admit that my hair looks a bit like straw au naturel. After using the Diamond Styling Iron it looks so much smoother and shinier that it appears healthier than it really is. Basically, it looks as good and smooth as it does after a professional blow-dry and style, when they often use 4 or 5 different products to make my hair look nice and shiny - I only used 1 leave-in product for heat protection.
Before/After
Overall
Being new to flat irons, I found the Diamond Styling Iron by Irresistible Me very easy to use but also fast and effective. I've discovered that straightening my hair gives me a very polished look and I like that! I can recommend it to anyone like me who wants a simple yet high-quality tool.
